APD officers get financial incentive to make traffic court appearances

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Atlanta mayor's is offering a new incentive to make sure the city's police show up to testify in traffic court.

If officers aren't there when cases are called, judges often dismiss the case and the city misses out on revenue from the traffic ticket.

"There's only 2 percent of the officers that are not showing up to court, but that is a substantial financial impact on the city's budget  and revenue," said Michael Bond, the Atlanta City Council Public Safety chairman.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said that he wants to see a more concerted effort from officers to get into court each time they are called. In returned, the mayor said that officers will see an extra 0.5 percent raise beginning in January.

"The court generally generates about $30 million towards the city's general funds, so not capturing those revenues has an impact on the budget," Bond said.

Judges do not dismiss serious cases such as DUI. In those instances, the judge will reset the case and make sure the officer shows up at the new date.
