Out of the Detroit mayoral race, what's next for Mike Duggan?

Former mayoral candidate Mike Duggan closed the door that could have led him to becoming the main man in Motown. So now the question on the minds of many is which door will Duggan walk through next?

"I am going to chose the course that allows me to have the biggest impact on the City of Detroit, and over the next month or two we're going to sort that out," he said.

What are his thoughts on the way Duggan for Detroit went down?

"To have the people of the city not be able to vote over a technicality of turning paperwork in two weeks early makes me angry, but the anger isn't really productive. So I'm going to work on figuring out what the next chapter is, and I hope to be actively involved in the community," he said.

What are his plans to put that in motion? Would he consider a congressional run?

"I don't think Washington is really the place to go," Duggan said.

What about a run for governor?

"We'll see," he said.

You know we had to ask what some folks would call the obvious, would he run for Wayne County executive?

"There's no way I would ever run for county executive," Duggan said.

We got political writer Jack Lessenberry's insight on what he thinks might be Duggan's next step.

On running for Rep. Gary Peters' seat in Congress, Lessenberry said, "I can't see Mike Duggan doing that, and I'm not even sure he could win. This is a seat that's majority-minority, and he would have a primary fight."

On running for governor, Lessenberry said, "I have to think the odds are pretty low. The Democratic Party has already coalesced around Mark Schauer from Battle Creek. It would certainly sort of upset everything. It would get Schauer mad. The last things the Democrats want is an expensive primary campaign. They're going to need every cent they have if they have any chance of taking on Governor Snyder successfully."

"The absolute logical thing for Duggan to do would be to run for Wayne County executive," Lessenberry continued. "Ficano is toast. I'm sure that he won't run for re-election. If he did run for re-election, my dog could defeat him."

Meanwhile, some political consultants say the race for Detroit mayor is now Sheriff Benny Napoleon's to lose.

"Benny Napoleon and I have been good friends. He was the police chief when I was a prosecutor, and he was a great police chief," Duggan said. "We've been partners before, and if he's elected the mayor, we're going to be partners again."

So would Duggan share his turnaround plan with Napoleon? Duggan said it is a possibility and that if Napoleon were to ask him for some insight, he would definitely pass it along.
