Crews gain hold on wildfire west of Prescott

Posted: Updated:
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -

Crews battling a 10-square-mile wildfire west of Prescott say they're starting to make progress on the blaze that's now 10 percent contained. 6,379 acres have burned.

More than 460 homes remain evacuated because of the Doce Fire but none have been destroyed. A local road was reopened Thursday to traffic.

Incident commander Tony Sciacca says the fire is anchored on the south end, and a line at the base of Little Granite Mountain is holding.

The fire has been active on the north end, threatening homes in the valley below Granite Mountain.

Air tankers had dropped fire retardant to create barriers between the blaze and the homes, but those resources were redirected Thursday to a wildfire in southern New Mexico.

Gov. Jan Brewer has declared an emergency in Yavapai County. Thursday's declaration makes $100,000 available to support emergency response and recovery efforts and authorizes the commander of the Arizona National Guard to mobilize troops if needed.

A community meeting is planned for Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the Ruth Theatre located at Prescott High School Auditorium.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Video: FOX 10's Jessica Flores and Andrew Hasbun talked to residents and got a tour of the fire-stricken area.
