FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -

A historic lodge and restaurant on Highway 89A was engulfed in flames early Wednesday morning.

Coconino County Sheriff's spokesman Gerald Blair says a burglary alarm activated around 1:30 a.m., waking up the owner of the Marble canyon Lodge and Restaurant at their home nearby. They also got a telephone call from the alarm company.

When the owner walked outside, Blair says the owner saw a large amount of smoke and flames coming from the back of the lodge.

Crew members with the construction company that's working on Lee's Ferry Road were staying at Marble Canyon Lodge and attempted to fight the fire with two company owned water tanker trucks.

Firefighters with the city of Page, Fredonia Fire Department, Colorado City/Hildale Fire Department, Page Electric, National Park Service Rangers from Lee's Ferry and Kane County Medical Transport responded to help.

The newer building that houses the post office and convenience store, located north of the lodge, wasn't damaged and neither was the motel that is located to the south.

According to Blair, the Marble Canyon Lodge was established in 1926 and is located 125 Miles North of Flagstaff near the Colorado River at Lee's Ferry.

CCSO deputies and detectives are working with Flagstaff firefighters to determine how the fire started.
