AMA Now Classifies Obesity As A Disease

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA -

Mark Weitzman, who has lost 35 pounds on a diet, says he's always been obese. Dennis Biondi says he has too. And, Paul Catapano who weighs 325 pounds says being obese isn't about what you eat, but who you are. That's it's not about behavior, but things like heredity. And, these three men all agree with the American Medical Association's Tuesday vote defining obesity as a disease. Until the vote doctors and others have often looked at obesity as a behavior problem. Not enough exercise ... too much food.

But, with this change in definition the AMA hopes more insurance companies will cover treatments related to excessive weight and the stigma some associate with obesity will disappear. Weitzman isn't so sure about that. Neither is Catapano. Catapano isn't even sure that what the doctors are doing is a good idea. Weitzman says he'll have to wait to see what results from this. Biondi, though, likes what the doctors have done and think it's a move in the right direction.

Officials say a 16-year-old boy is "lucky to be alive" and unharmed after flying from California to Hawaii stowed away in a plane's wheel well, surviving cold temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen. "Doesn't even remember the flight," FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night. "It's amazing he survived that."
