Murder/Suicide In Camden County

Posted: Updated:
CAMDEN COUNTY, N.J. -

Published reports are saying this is a murder/suicide. The victim is 47 year old family practice doctor Michelle Liggio, and the alleged gunman is her estranged husband 58 year old Christopher.

Camden County authorities have confirmed that information. They say that Michelle recently filed for divorce from Christopher.

A swarm of activity at Dr. Liggio's family practice on Maple Avenue was not unusual; she was hugely popular with her patients.

According to one of her patients, Joe McCollum, "Nice person. Everybody that works there very friendly. They make you feel comfortable."

All that changed just after 12:30 this afternoon. A 911 call to police. A disturbance inside the office. Camden County prosecutor spokesman Jason Laughlin was eating lunch across the street.

According to spokesman Laughlin, "I just look out the window and saw the lights. The police lights and saw officers outside here."

Inside the office, police found two gunshot victims originally reported simply as an adult male and adult female. One patient told us Dr. Liggio's husband was often seen when they came there for an appointment.

"He works in the office with her. I don't know exactly what he does. He has his own little desk and he's a big help to her practice," said Cindy Fulton, a patient.

As patients gathered near the office, hoping the rumors they had heard about the fate of their beloved doctor were wrong, Francisco Sandoval was shaking his head at a fluke of timing.

"My appointment was at 1:40," said Sandoval. "I was running a little bit late. Actually I was trying to call to let them know I was running late but nobody answered the phone."

It is entirely possible the violence at this doctor's office had already occurred when that phone was ringing.
