Committee OKs design concept for Falcons stadium

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The committee overseeing the new Atlanta Falcons stadium plans approved a design concept on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the Georgia World Congress Center board  gave the  green light to a design concept and construction team set to build the billion dollar project.

Falcons President Rich McKay said the team hopes to create unique attraction for the city.

"We are not trying to build a generic stadium. We are trying to build an iconic stadium for Atlanta," said McKay.

The approved design includes a symbolic wing design. The all-weather roof open and closes from the middle. Endzone seating will be reduced, but sideline seats will be expanded. The 70,000 seat stadium will glow at night.

The Hunt Construction Group will build the stadium. The exact location of the stadium has yet to be determined. Two churches that sit on the preferred location are still mulling their options.

"We're pretty respectful of the process. We're not going to push it because this is a sensitive issue and one that we have taken the position that,  if they don't deem it to be in their best interests and don't want to do it, then we will move to the north side," McKay said.

Back in April, an agreement for the Kansas City-based 360 Architecture was approved by the Georgia World Congress Center Authority. 360 Architecture has designed several sports facilities around the world, including MetLife Stadium -- home of the New York Giants and New York Jets.
