Sibling Rivalry & Bullying

Posted: Updated:

An estimated one in three American children report having been bullied by a brother or sister.  According to a new study published in  "Pediatrics" bullying by a sibling can be just as harmful as bullying from peers or strangers, with serious consequences including depression, anxiety, and lowered self esteem.

Child and family Psychotherapist Dr. Fran Walfish told Fox 11 that when sibling rivalry morphs into harmful bullying  there are often signs that should prompt action from parents.  Signs of sibling bullying include 1) Fear of being alone with a sibling.  2) Bruising or visual evidence of physical assault.  3) Verbalization of jealousy or hostility by the aggressor. 4) Fascination on the part of the aggressor with fire or hurting animals.   Dr. Walfish recommends open family discussions about bullying in the home, as well as setting aside special time for each child to be alone with each parent on a regular basis.
