Man tried to lure girl, 10, into his car at church parking lot

LILBURN, Ga. -

Police are asking everyone to take a good look at the sketch of a man suspected of trying to lure a young girl into his car in Lilburn.

Authorities want to question this man in connection with an attempted child abduction that took place earlier this month. A mother says it happened when she took her 10-year-old daughter to rollerblade at the 1st Baptist Church in Lilburn.

According to police, a man driving in a dark-colored, possibly gray Dodge Charger approached the girl.

Lilburn Capt. Thom Bardugon said, "The driver, we were told, asked the girl if she wanted to race him ... then said she was very pretty, she looked like she could be a model and opened his car door and said, 'Would you like to get in the car?'"

When the man saw the mother coming toward her daughter, he took off. Police say the mother saw the same Charger just a few minutes later as she was leaving the area. The car was parked at a Shell gas station at the corner of Rockbridge Road and Lilburn-Stone Mountain Road.

Captain Bardugon said, "Next to the vehicle, (she) looked into the vehicle, saw the driver, she realized it was the same person. He saw her looking at him and he attempted to hide his face and then he drove out of the parking lot at a fairly high rate of speed."

Police say the man used a credit card to buy items inside the market area of the Shell station. They're hoping help from the public can help them identify and find this man.

"We have no information that suggests that this person is involved in anything else. When this first came to our attention we did check with neighboring jurisdictions. Nobody else had a similar complaint," the Lilburn captain said.
