DETROIT (WJBK) -

A man is under arrest after a woman was fatally stabbed Tuesday morning inside a Detroit apartment building. Neighbors said the victim is Rosemarie Carnegie, a longtime tenant who was very well liked.

According to neighbors, Carnegie was trying to get out of the man's apartment when he stabbed her in the chest.

Calvin Richardson lives across the hall and said he heard Carnegie screaming for help. When he opened the door, he said he saw her bleeding on the floor.

"I immediately went to get a towel to put in her neck," Richardson said.

Carnegie died at the hospital.

Neighbors said the trouble began the night before and that Carnegie was being held in the killer's apartment.

"There were screams heard at 9:30 last night, but the neighbors thought that there were children playing in the hallway, so they didn't notify authorities," said Rene Thompson, the victim's friend.

"She was trying to get away then," Richardson said.

Police arrested the man neighbors identified as Carnegie's killer. The suspect's name has not yet been released.
