DETROIT (WJBK) -

After over 90 years in business, everything must go. Serman's, the premiere men's clothing store in downtown Detroit, is closing its doors for good.

"My grandfather started this business in 1917 and our first store was on Hastings Street, and then he moved to [our present] location in the early 1940s," said owner Steve Ross. "It's time. I want to go out as a winner, not a loser."

So many have walked through the doors from the guy down the block to Steve Harvey.

"In the sixties and seventies, it was superfly," Ross said. "Detroit was famous all over the country for its fashions, and all of Motown, we had 20 or more men's clothing stores and shoe stores in downtown."

"Unfortunately, most of the young people today will never be able to experience what it's like shopping in a neighborhood clothing store."

Tuesday, Ross received the Spirit of Detroit Award from the Detroit City Council.

"It was very humbling. Common council gave me the Spirit of Detroit Award. It was a great honor," he said.

Dan Gilbert bought Serman's building, and Ross shared his thoughts on Gilbert.

"I think Dan Gilbert is the best thing that's ever happened to the city of Detroit because he understands what all the components are that are necessary to have a thriving and successful downtown," he said. "There's absolutely no question that he'll succeed. What he's doing would take the city of Detroit a hundred years to accomplish."

"I think Dan Gilbert is like the Henry Ford of our generation. He gets it. He understands it, and more importantly, he knows how to implement his plans."

Serman's will remain open for another four to six weeks, so there is still time to stop in, say thank you and goodbye.
