South Street Gunfire At Cops, 100th Homicide Cap Violent Weekend

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A man was arrested early Sunday morning for allegedly shooting into a crowd on South Street and then firing shots at police.

It happened just before 2 a.m. on South Street near Sixth Street. Police did not shoot back.

That shooting was part of a bloody weekend. One person was killed, and at least nine people were injured in six separate shootings between Friday and Sunday.

But police say they are not surprised. When temperatures rise, so does the violence.

"Traditionally that's the way things go. In terms of hot weather warm weather starts especially this early in the season," Philadelphia Police Lt. John Stanford said.

The one murder this weekend happened in West Philadelphia on the 6000 block of Jefferson Street. Officers found a 29-year-old victim shot dead in the middle of the road.

That marked the 100th murder in the city, so far this year.

FOX 29's Chris O'Connell has more details in this video report.
