Another Philly Cop Busted, This Time For Bribery, Extortion

PHILADELPHIA -

Only FOX 29 was there as disgraced Philadelphia Police Officer Jonathan Lazarde pull his hood up to hide his face and kept quiet.

He surrendered to Internal Affairs on Thursday to face bribery and extortion charges.

"These are really serious crimes, and they strike, frankly, right at the heart of the credibility of the justice system," said First Assistant District Attorney Edward McCann.

The five-year police veteran was caught up in a sting operation allegedly soliciting a bribe from a suspect he had arrested on gun charges. Internal affairs investigators wired up the suspect and he caught Lazarde on tape allegedly accepting a $5,000 bribe. In return, Lazarde agreed not to show up in court so the case would be dismissed.

"If you're not going to honor the uniform, don't put it on," one local resident told FOX 29 when he heard the news of Lazarde's arrest.

People who live in the 35th District where Lazarde worked and where several police officers have lost their lives in the line of duty in recent years, were disturbed by the news of another officer's arrest.

"It's real scary. And it's no telling what that person would do from then on out," one resident said.

Lazarde is the second veteran officer busted in a week. Last week, 24-year veteran narcotics officer Jeffrey Walker was busted in another sting operation. He allegedly set up and ripped off a drug dealer for $15,000 in cash and five pounds of marijuana.

"You tarnish the badge, you're no longer a Philadelphia Police officer and it puts a cloud over everybody out there doing a good job," said FOP President John McNesby.

"If they did what they're accused of doing, they not only deserve to be removed from the police department, they deserve to go to jail," McCann said.

Lazarde resigned form the police department right after he allegedly got caught red-handed with the marked bribery money. He faces a substantial sentence, if convicted on the charges. He will not be fired because he resigned. The chances of him getting any pension money are very small, if at all, FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser reported.
