Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting across from the House of Tricks restaurant near 7th Street and Mill Avenue.
According to authorities, a street sweeper heard a lot of noise Monday morning around 4 a.m. -- a person was throwing items around and described the situation as "someone going crazy." He called the police.
When officers arrived at the scene, they approached the suspect and tried to get him to calm down, with no luck.
Tempe Police Sgt. Mike Pooley say the suspect threw a wine bottle at a sergeant, hitting him in the head.
The sergeant fired back, hitting the suspect in the hand. A police dog that was about to retire was hurt as well.
"When the canine went in.. because of all the glass that was broken, it cut its paw very badly," said Pooley. "There was quite a lot of blood that was lost."
The dog's paw was stitched up and he'll be okay. This was one of his last assignments.
The sergeant did not suffer life-threatening injuries and is expected to be okay.
As for the suspect, he was transported to an area hospital for treatment. He will face aggravated assault charges when discharged from the hospital.
No names were released in this case.
