Is your car ready for summer travel?

Posted: Updated:

Summer is almost here, and that means lots of people will be hitting the roads on vacation.  But before you go, don't forget to give your car a little TLC to get it ready for the highway.

After a few months of colder conditions, your vehicle needs help getting ready to handle the summer heat.  Derek Cassey, manager of Midtown Tire in Toco Hills, says when it's 90 degrees outside, it's almost double that under your hood.  He says you should focus on your electrical system, and things like your battery, alternator and coolant levels.

Cassey says there's a lot you can do yourself, like checking your fluids and your wiper blades.  He says you should make sure they're smooth and not cracking on the ends.

And don't forget about your tire pressure.  That can save you money.  The tread on your tires, or the lack thereof, can also be a hidden danger.  Cassey says the less tread you have, the higher your chance of hydroplaning.  Just remember to use the penny test.  If you place the penny in your tire's tread and you can still see the top of Abraham Lincoln's head, it's time for new tires.

Experts say the longer your road trip, the higher the chance that something could go wrong with your car.  So, having it checked out is even more important.
