Boy battling cancer receives ride in SWAT vehicle

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -

An 8-year-old metro Atlanta boy battling cancer received a big surprise on Tuesday when he got a ride in a SWAT vehicle.

Conner Arneson suffers from a rare childhood cancer, neuroblastoma, which affects the nerve tissues. The boy dreamed of riding in a SWAT vehicle, so Officer Mark Tappan, a member of the North Fulton SWAT, spread the word on social media.

Officers from the Alpharetta, Milton and Roswell police departments got involved and organized a ride for Conner and his friends in a SWAT vehicle to Bruster's for some ice cream.

The SWAT team presented Conner with banners, pins and hats from around the country that proclaimed Connor and his family as their heroes.

"People look at SWAT and they see those guys as heroes because we're willing to face fear and danger, but it's just for a short amount of time. These guys are battling day after day for years," said Tappan.

Conner's mother, Melinda Arneson, was grateful for the effort.

"We love them. Mark knows we love them. These guys are off today, or they are not working right now, so they took the time to come do this for us. It's amazing," said Melinda Arneson.

Conner has gone through six rounds of chemotherapy and stem cell treatment and is now enduring painful antibody treatment.
