CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 9-year-old boy was seriously injured Sunday when a neighbor's dog jumped a fence and attacked him in his Roseland neighborhood backyard.

The boy was playing in his yard in the 200 block of West 112th Place about 8 p.m. when the attack occurred, police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada said.

A nephew of the dog owner was able to pull the animal off the boy, who suffered bites to his arms and legs, Estrada said.

The child was taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with bites to his arms and legs, Estrada said.

Richard Williams, 45, of the 200 block of West 112th Place, was cited for not having a required dog license or rabies vaccination, and failure to keep an animal under restraint.

The dog is being held by the city Animal Care and Control Unit, where it will be determined if the animal has rabies, Estrada said. The breed of dog was not immediately known.
