Decatur lacrosse team's season ends in semifinals

DECATUR, Ga. -

Decatur High School's lacrosse team's dream season came to an end Tuesday in the state semifinals. The Bulldogs lost to the Westminster Wildcats, 6-5.

For Coach Don Rigger, the berth to the state semifinals was 11 years in the making in the city of Decatur. Many of the guys on the squad were playing lacrosse together when Coach Rigger put it together as a rec team.

" I knew what a great game it was and pretty much when you get a kid out there and a kid who likes to run around and mix it up, they're going to love it," Rigger said.

Since then, lacrosse has stuck around dDecatur and it definitely has the backing of the community.

"The school and the whole town has supported this team and, you know, it's the rec kids, it's the students, it's the parents. It's really gratifying and it's meant a lot to us," Rigger said.

While the Bulldogs' season came to a disappointing end with their first loss on their home turf  in the state semifinal game, Rigger says he couldn't be more proud of the team.

"Win or lose, their hearts are huge. People may not know, but these guys grew up in the apartments across the street. They don't have a lot of material things, but they've got hearts like you wouldn't believe," Rigger said.

FOX 5 Sports' Merissa Lynn talked to coach Don Rigger after the game.

It is the year of the rookie in the NASCAR Spring Cup Series. There are eight drivers vying for Rookie of the Year honors, but even those guys seem old when compared with the driver we found here.
