PHILADELPHIA -

One of Hollywood's biggest stars takes drastic measures by going under the knife.

We're talking about Angelina Jolie. It's a surgery she hopes will save her life.

Jolie made the choice to get a double mastectomy because she says she was at high risk for breast cancer, and she says she wants to stay alive for her kids.

Last month, she finished three months of surgical procedures to remove both breasts.

You may remember Jolie's mother died not too long ago after a long battle with cancer.

The 37-year-old actress wrote an opinion piece that appears Tuesday in the New York Times called "My Medical Choice."

In the article, Jolie says she learned she carried a gene that makes it extremely likely she'd get cancer, the BRCA1 gene.

In fact, doctors said the chance of getting breast cancer was 87 percent and 50 percent for ovarian cancer. It was ovarian cancer that killed her mother.

Now, the risks of breast cancer have been lowered to five percent.

Jolie says she hopes her decision will help other women. She's already had the reconstructive surgery.

Jolie isn't the only star to have a double mastectomy. Miss America contestant Allyn Rose, 24, announced she'd have one because breast cancer has already killed three women in her family. That includes her mother and grandmother.

Sharon Osbourne also had the procedure after finding out she carried the gene. She called the surgery a no-brainer.

The 60-year-old had the surgery 10 years after surviving a battle with colon cancer.

Our Dr. Mike Cirigliano joined "Good Day" Tuesday morning to Jolie's surprise surgery.

He talked about procedure, and the actress' chances of getting the disease after the surgery, the cost and whether it could be an option for you.
