Body found in Salt Creek was homeless man

HINSDALE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A body found in Salt Creek in the western suburbs when it flooded April 18 has been identified as a 54-year-old homeless man, Pioneer Press is reporting.

Through fingerprint records, the man was identified as Michael Hardin, DuPage County Chief Deputy Coroner Charlie Dastych said. The man apparently drowned.

The coroner's office was able to obtain a "very, very minute fingerprint" from a small area on one finger, which was enhanced through advanced photography measures. The print matched fingerprints from an arrest record for Hardin, Dastych said.

Hardin's last known address was at a PADS homeless shelter in January, based on documents investigators found with the body.

Family members were located outside DuPage County and will handle the disposition of Hardin's body, Dastych said.

The coroner's office does not know when Hardin died, but it could be as long ago as January, Dastych said.

It's also not known where Hardin died. His body was recovered from the swollen Salt Creek on the east side of York Road near Graue Mill.

But because rain had flooded the area, the corpse could have traveled from another body of water or from the ground upstream from where it was found, Dastych said.
