DWP Payroll Now Focus Of Debate In Mayoral Race

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA -

A new Los Angeles Times report reveals the pay of LA DWP employees, and it may have an impact on the race to become LA's next mayor.

From Gigi Graciette:

According to today's LA Times, "Average employee pay at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power rose 15% over the last five years."Sweet!

Even sweeter, according to the Times, "the average DWP pay rose from $88,299 in 2008 to $101,237 in 2012. DWP pay grew at about three times the rate of inflation in the Greater Los Angeles Area."

Nice!

But if you're like most of us, your paycheck didn't go up nearly as much. It might have even gone down. Or maybe you're one of the many who lost your job as LA and the rest of the country went into a financial slump.

If you are, then you'll probably find the pay raises at DWP hard to understand. But hey, if the average customer can't understand their monthly bill, why should we understand this?

And this, my friends, is where I think our real focus - and outrage - should be. Our bill! I'm looking at my last DWP bill right now and the glaring amount due of $552.10. Five hundred and fifty-two dollars and ten cents. Wow.

You would think that for that high an amount my bill would at least be written in a language that I can understand, but no, it's written in "Technical Mumbo-Jumbo Gibberish". For example, DWP says that of the $552.10 I owe them, $126.47 is for ECA_VEA_CRPSEA_VRPSEA.

Yup, clear and concise. Yet another $12.57 is owed for ESA_RCA_IRCA.

That explains it!

I'm not even going to get into Tier 1, Tier 2, HCF's, kWh's and zones. You would think that for a salary of $101,000 someone at DWP would be able to write a bill in common English. Geez.

So as a resident of LA, in addition to asking our next Mayor to fix all that is broken (which is a lot) I'd also like to ask them to pass a law, a mandate, a something,  that would force the DWP to write my bill in English. Heck, I'll even take it in Portuguese.

Promise to fix that (along with that nasty pothole on my street - oh, and trim that city tree at my mom's; it's way too big) and you may just have my vote.

That is, if I have enough money left over for gas to go vote after paying my ECA_VEA_CRPSEA_VRPSEA.

Rat poison may be responsible for the sorry condition of a wild mountain lion in LA's Griffith Park. The mountain lion is known to the National Park Service as ‘P-22'.

I met the folks from Gunnar Optiks at CES this year and they had something new to show me. The Intercepts. I have a big head, these are big frames, it was kismet but do they work as good as they look? We'll see.
