DETROIT (WJBK) -

An eleven-year-old boy took a bullet to the chest late Tuesday night while he was sitting on the couch inside his west side Detroit home.  His mom's friend, a 26-year-old man, was on the doorstep with dinner when he was ambushed by two men.  Neighbors said the shooters hid in an abandoned home and opened fired with no regard for anyone else.

Malinda Duncan lives next door to the victims.  She like many in Detroit is tired of killing and demanding that the mayor and the governor clean up the city.

"Look through these houses, if they [are] no good, tear [them] down so people can stop finding dead relatives in these damn houses," she said.  "If it was [your] family members, you all would do the right damn things."

Both of the victims were rushed to the hospital.  The child's grandmother, Dr. Joyce Jones, leader of Stop the Violence Prevention Outreach, is now praying that her own grandson will make a full recovery.

"It was a long surgery," she said.  "When he finally came out, I was able to... go in and see for myself that he was fine and be able to pray with him and to be able to see him open his eyes."

The boy's uncle came to the scene the day after the shooting, asking neighbors what they saw, looking for answers and justice.

"I think all of us need to start being advocates and stop the violence, especially when it come[s] to our children," he said.
