WASHINGTON -

Entomologists are predicting that the 17-year cicadas expected on the East Coast between now and early June could number in the billions.

They are due to emerge from the ground between the Carolinas and Connecticut in the next few weeks.

The Brood II cicadas live a short life cycle. Mixxy Henriksen, spokeswoman for the National Pest Management Association, says there's nothing much you can do about the swarms of bulgy-eyed insects known for the loud noise they make.

But she says they are harmless. They don't bite or sting. They crawl up trees and the females lay as many as 600 eggs at a time. They die after the mating season, but the males continue their pursuit of several female partners.

Henriksen says when the bugs are swarming, they can reach a level of 90 decibels, which is as loud as a rock concert.
