LOS ANGELES (AP) -

Actor and former newsman Mario Machado, a Los Angeles television news anchor in the 1960s and 1970s who also appeared in movies such as "Rocky III" and "Scareface," has died. He was 78.

His daughter, Michelle, told the Los Angeles Times that Machado died Saturday from complications of pneumonia at a Los Angeles convalescent facility.

KCBS-TV reported that Machado was of Chinese and Portuguese descent and was Los Angeles's first Asian-American newscaster. Over a decades-long career, he was a newsman, producer, TV show host and soccer commentator. He worked at KCBS-TV, its predecessor and at what is now KCAL-TV.

He also played a newsman in TV shows and movies, including the "Robocop" films and "Oh, God!"
