Construction spreads headaches in Minnesota

Posted: Updated:
BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (KMSP) -

Several hundred road construction projects will soon be underway throughout Minnesota. You have 35-E in Burnsville shut down, we have on going lane restrictions along 694 in Arden Hills, next weekend you have I-94 in Minneapolis shut down – and summer construction season is just beginning.

Drivers like Shawn Fitzgibbons aren't waiting any longer and taking matters into their own hands.

"You kind of have to go in and risk your vehicle," Fitzgibbons said.

This woman in front of him is still stuck at this stop sign, backing up traffic and hasn't moved in five minutes. We counted.

On Highway 100 in Brooklyn Center, both lanes are closed because of construction. All the traffic is being rerouted to the ramps, but once all the drivers get to this intersection, they're on their own.

With hundreds of construction projects underway or about to begin this summer, this area is just one of many headaches developing on the highways. The Minnesota Department of Transportation is warning drivers about the big ones: I-694, a good stretch of 35E, and what seems to be the never-ending Highway 10 project.

"Well, if we don't do the construction, you're not going to get anywhere so we just want people to be patient," Kent Barnard of MnDOT said.

In Arden Hills near Highway 10, patience is fleeting. It's just a scene of confusing orange signs, plastic fencing protecting homes, and no more street lights to help with traffic.

Alec Debar is confused by the detours that brought him to this dead end and he's looking for back roads to get out of here.

"I just need to drive around and hopefully find the right spot where I need to go, if not, turn around and go back," Debar said.

It's not just the drivers, but neighbors like Natasha Sandford who say all the detour traffic coming through the neighborhood and a sea of cranes and tractors alter the scenery.

"It just shakes the whole house," she said. "It's not pretty at all."

MnDOT says crews are also patching potholes this summer which is adding to the work. Most of the projects should end by late summer, but until then, drivers should be prepared and plan ahead.
