DETROIT (WJBK) -

An elderly man is in police custody after a murder at the Philip Sims Senior Apartments on Detroit's east side.  Investigators described a gruesome and bloody scene -- a women's body dismembered.

The 72-year-old suspect was taken out on a stretcher and taken to the hospital.

We're told the bloody torso of a women in her forties was found in the bathtub of his eleventh floor apartment.  Police were called to the building when residents reported seeing the man carrying bags dripping blood in an elevator and on the sidewalk.

Neighbors said the suspect uses a wheelchair, but they have also seen him walk.

Thelma McCaa said she and a younger woman, possibly the victim, helped him back to his apartment a few days ago because he appeared to be drunk.

"He told the girl who help me pull him up that she was going to hell.  I said, 'Why?  She's helping me get you in your apartment,'" McCaa told us.

Homicide investigators spent the day looking for evidence and scouring the area using a police canine unit for any more missing body parts.

Some neighbors expressed fear after seeing the police activity.  Two women described the suspect as unfriendly and someone who had a lot of women around.

"I saw a lot of [females] a couple times," one woman said.

"I wasn't afraid of him, but it's like I should've been," the other said.

One neighbor said security is lax.  There are drugs and prostitution in the building, and people who should not be there are getting inside.  She said she has complained to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, but nothing has been done.

We do not yet have the name of the suspect or the victim.  We're told the man is not cooperating with police.
