Fraud Moms: Scamming Insurance Companies

Posted: Updated:

A group of women busted for allegedly scamming hundreds of thousands of dollars from the government and private insurance companies. Police say Vessie Phillips, Mary Bizor and Hollisha Dunbar would open up insurance policies using real and fictitious identities. Then, they would file claims saying they were injured. Investigators say not only were the injuries fake, the doctors who filled out the medical claims were fake too.

After a lengthy investigation, detectives discovered the doctors listed on the forms do not exist.

Investigators believe  Vessie Phillips is the ring leader. They say Phillips began scamming insurance companies and when she began to cash in, family members joined her in defrauding insurance companies. State insurance fraud investigator Yvette Cordero says the group was organized and consisted of at least 8 people. Cordero says they purchased the policies for themselves and other individuals that did not exist. They paid the premiums and began making the claims of multiple injuries. Investigators say they first became suspicious of this group because they couldn't spell.

When they filed the medical claims, allegedly pretending to be doctors, they misspelled all of the injuries. Still, detectives say the group managed to scam more than 270-thousand dollars.   Detectives say the women were also stealing from the government. According to court documents, the women took advantage of a government funded in-home care program which is designed to help the elderly and those who are disabled.

Investigators say the women assumed the identity of the caregivers and collected monthly checks.  Evidence shows the patients didn't exist and at least in once case, the patient they claimed to be taking care of was dead.

Gina Silva caught up with two of the women outside of court and got their reaction.  They deny all of the charges against them.

Hell on earth, that's how some doctors describe Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa also known as E.B. It's a horrible genetic disease that Nicky Zahorcak was born with. A lot of his skin is raw, the slightest touch can cause blisters that quickly spread. He says, "Right now, all the bandages that you see everywhere even on my sides, they're all raw skin." His mother Silvia says very few people know about this rare condition and she wants to change that.
