Gay marriage debate rages in Illinois, bill pending in House

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Illinois Senate has already approved a measure to legalize gay marriage in the state, and Governor Quinn said he will support it. But opponents are fighting back.

Several groups are planning to protest on Saturday, in front of state representative Ron Sandack's office in Downers Grove. They're mad that he's supporting gay marriage.

Opponents say gay marriage is detrimental to families and against God's teachings.

But Sandack said he is not backing down.

The bill is pending in the Illinois House, after the State Senate's February vote to pass it.

At the same time, four country music stars are announcing their support for legislation that would legalize same-sex marriage in Illinois.

"Big" Kenny Alphin of the musical duo Big & Rich, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Emmy Lou Harris and Rodney Crowell signed an open letter released Thursday.

They say "gay or straight, when two people are lucky enough to find each other and want to commit their lives to one another, it is nothing less than a blessing to us all."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
