Groups meet to discuss need for CPS funding

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

Child advocacy groups from around the valley will meet Tuesday to discuss problems with CPS in Arizona.

This meeting comes after Governor Jan Brewer proposed an additional $77 million in funding for Child Protective Services in our state.

Foster parents and former CPS workers will also be on hand to talk about their experience with CPS.

The problem is that CPS has been facing a budget shortfall for several years.  Emergency legislation was passed back in January by Brewer to fund CPS with an additional $4.5 million so the agency could hire 50 extra full-time workers.

Since 2009, the agency has seen a 32 percent increase in child abuse reports.

Now Gov. Brewer is asking lawmakers for $77 million in CPS funding for next year's budget -- but that has yet to be approved.

The meeting starts at 1 p.m.
