WASHINGTON -

A Maryland mother is accused of offering her 15-year-old daughter up for sex to pay off a $5,000 debt.

The mother, whose name isn't being released, and a 44-year-old Gaithersburg man, identified as Bejarni Rivas, are facing numerous criminal charges.

According to the details of the crime in the grand jury indictment, between December 2012 and March 2013, the mother forced her teenage daughter to perform sex acts with Rivas for debt relief.

The sexual abuse allegedly happened several times at a Georgian Colonies Clubhouse in Silver Spring, and a few times at the Germantown home the teen shared with her mother and little brother. After each encounter with Rivas, the mother was allegedly given $100.

According to the documents, on one occasion when the girl begged not to go with Rivas, her mother said, "I've done bad things to make you have a good life. Go with him."

The sex abuse ended after the teenage victim told another relative. The two of them went to Montgomery County Police.

Ramon Korionoff, a spokesman for the Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office says, "These charges are serious, and the community is understandably upset, but we look forward to proving these charges in court."

According to the indictment, that relative says Rivas tried to have a sexual relationship with her when she was younger but she refused.

The relative goes on to say in the indictment that the 44-year-old was well known in their group of family and friends and that he liked "having relationships with young girls."

The victim's mother claims she did not know about the rape.

"Should these two be convicted in a court of law, they would face a lot of time behind bars,” says Korionoff.

At Rivas' Gaithersburg home, a young woman seen going inside denied knowing Rivas or anything about the case.

Neighbors say Rivas moved in less than a year ago.

Carla Gomez says Rivas hardly interacted with other neighbors. She is shocked by the charges.

"Very surprised because this is a very quiet neighbor,” Gomez says. “Lots of kids. They play outside, so I don't know. I'm very shocked."

Officials won't say what the led to the original debt.

Rivas has been indicted on 13 charges ranging from second-degree rape to sex trafficking. Rivas is out on a $100,000 bond.

The victim's mother is charged with 11 counts. She is being held on a $250,000 bond.

The teenage victim is staying with relatives.
