Atlanta PD adding 30 SWAT officers

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The Atlanta Police SWAT Squad is looking for additional officers who can respond to extraordinary incidents.

Atlanta's police chief put the plan in motion before the attack in Boston, but authorities here say incidents like that one make it even more of a priority.

APD is looking to add 30 specialized officers to back up the current SWAT unit.

"They going to get the state one-week course, which will is going to put them on par where they can help in the perimeter and help assist if we need ammo brought up," said Lt. Michael Lewis of APD SWAT.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed says he understands the painstaking work required from the special squad.

"We are not overwhelmed because we have a force that is more appropriate for our city now," Reed said.

The Atlanta force has ample equipment to respond. New technology and better tactics require constant training.

"That is what we train for all the time. Whether it's securing or responding to an incident like they had in Boston, whether it's responding to a barricaded gunman, handling suspicious package calls --our team is one of the best in the country, I can honestly say that," said Sgt. Andrew Senzer of the APD SWAT Unit.

Officials hope to have all the new members selected within 60 days.
