Man held in mental hospital for attack

Posted: Updated:

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut judge says prosecutors proved the elements of a Bridgeport man's attack of a 77-year-old woman but he acquitted him by reason of insanity.

The Connecticut Post reports that Superior Court Judge Robert Devlin Jr. ruled that Marvin Narcise suffered from a mental disease when he assaulted Marjorie Meketa in December 2011. Devlin announced his decision on Friday.

Authorities accused Narcise of stabbing Meketa with a broken wine glass as she left her neighborhood grocery store. He also was accused of stomping on her head.

She spent several months in the hospital and now has only limited function.

Narcise was confined by the judge to a state mental hospital.

His lawyer presented a psychiatrist and a psychologist who testified that Narcise has suffered for years from a mental disorder.
