Wired subway stations

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The days of having to finish your call before heading through the turnstile or down on to the platform may be slowly coming to an end.

The MTA and Transit Wireless, the company that owns and operates the city's wireless subway service, says cell phone and Wi-Fi wiring is complete in 36 stations on the west side including Times Square, Columbus Circle and Lincoln Center. You'll be able to make and take calls, but only if you have AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Transit Wireless still needs to work out contracts with the other carriers.

We found service was online in the Times Square station a couple flights down on the 7 train platform. One woman who has T-Mobile was able to get a full signal.

While for some people the subway has been the last bastion of solitude from the 21st Century wireless world, many agree some service is better than none at all.

The MTA and Transit Wireless plan to hook up some Midtown and Queens stations in December. Stations in the Bronx, Harlem and Upper East Side will follow next year.

All 277 subway stations should be wireless by April 2017, according to Transit Wireless. Service will not be available in the tunnels.

Keep in mind that NYPD has warned riders about thieves going after cell phones and iPads, so keep an eye out.

One final point, when you take or make a call, just remember to use your inside voice.
