Drone Video Captures Hillside Home Collapse

Posted: Updated:
Grand Terrace, CA -

(FOX 11) Walt and Sherry Ferar felt bad when they heard what happened to Arthur and Rosalinda Jimenez's home. On Tuesday the ground under the Jimenez hillside home in Grand Terrace collapsed.

Walt, a pilot and aerial photographer, has be working on a video drone for the past two years. When the couple heard about the Jimenez's home, they grabbed the drone and, in the parking lot below the house, started flying the craft and videotaping the slide.

The goal was to give it to the geologists to help in their investigation of what caused the hillside to fall apart and the extent of damage, including a 20 to 25 foot fissure.

Walt always tinkered with model planes so toying around with parts in his garage he made "Observation." It's a craft about 2 feet in each direction, and it's powered electrically by three brush motors. The drone is computer stabilized and can fly up to 35 mph. It even has GPS and virtual reality goggles, which allows Ferar to feel like he's actually in the craft at the controls.

The Ferar's said they were giving the video to the Jimenez's and geologists for free and they would let us have it to show our viewers as well.

The video was also given to FOX 11 for free by Aerial Images.

The first time I saw "Observation" I couldn't believe my eyes! FOX 11 Photographer Tony Buttitta and I had been escorted out onto the Jimenez patio to get video of the damage. As I looked out over the railing I found myself staring at what looked like an gigantic one-eyed mosquito. It was Ferar's drone.

It's not clear how "Observation's" video may or may not help in this situation, but before we left I saw the Ferar's and Jimenez's talking with each other. It was like a couple of neighbors having a chat. Actually, to Walt and Sherry, what they were doing was downright neighborly.

I met the folks from Gunnar Optiks at CES this year and they had something new to show me. The Intercepts. I have a big head, these are big frames, it was kismet but do they work as good as they look? We'll see.
