Francis Parker 4th graders release trout into Lake Michigan on Earth Day

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Some Chicago fourth graders celebrated Earth Day in a special way at Diversey Harbor on Monday. They had the chance to see their science project come to fruition - in the form of full grown fish.

Francis W. Parker School and the local chapter of Trout Unlimited partnered up to put on this great program.

In the fall, the fourth graders received trout eggs, and watched them grow over the past months. About 120 trout were released into the lake on Monday.

They were sad to see their newfound friends take to the water, but let them go with smiles on their faces.

"You can see the looks on their faces how proud they are of their achievement," Jeff Goad said. "They have taken something, grown them, taken care of the water. It's a lot of responsibility and they learn how important and connect themselves to what's important in a healthy, safe and clean environment."

The first Earth Day took place in 1970. It helped to pass the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and raise our consciousness about living in a little greener lifestyle.
