A 25-year-old woman was taken into custody Sunday after she was found running in traffic while carrying her 3-year-old son. Authorities originally believed both had been stabbed.
Scottsdale police say Serina Figueroa was seen running in the way of traffic while carrying her son near Scottsdale and McDowell Roads.
Figueroa was only wearing a shirt and had blood on her body. Officers say she was talking incoherently about a fight she got into earlier in the day.
Her 3-year-old son was only wearing pajama pants and had blood on him also.
Originally, firefighters thought they both had stab wounds.
Police say Figueroa was taken to a hospital to be treated for the cuts to her body and for the effects of meth.
Figueroa's son was taken to a hospital to receive treatment for a severe cut on his leg. Police say the boy was tested for drugs and was found to have meth in his system.
He was turned over to Child Protective Services when he was discharged.
Officers traced the blood trail back to a chain link fence topped with barbed wire near the intersection.
Police say the child's shirt was attached to the top of the fence and it appeared Figueroa attempted to climb over the fence with her son. Officers believe that's how both of them were injured.
Figueroa was released from the hospital and booked into jail on multiple counts of child abuse, indecent exposure, trespassing, and endangerment.
