SW Philly Man Left Stranded After Someone Steals His Wheelchair

James Peace can barely walk because he was the victim of a horrible crime that left one side of his body paralyzed. 

"It was December 20th of 1989 that the right side of my head was blown off with a 9mm semi automatic assault rifle in a robbery situation," Peace said.

He uses a cane to move around inside his house.  But what he needs most to get around, he says somebody stole.

"How are you going to steal from someone that's handicap?" said James.

It happened while he was visiting friends at a house near 61st and Christian Street in southwest Philly.

"They emptied the basket out in the middle of the street and then took the scooter," he said. James had parked his Golden Companion mobility scooter at the base of the steps to the house and went in. Moments later, it was gone. He says he doesn't have the nearly $3,000 to get a new one.

Police said they took a report but so far have no leads. James, who is also a marine veteran, will never completely walk again on his own. He desperately needs his wheel chair back.

"That's my primary means of transportation. It's how I get around. Without that I'm stuck in the house like an invalid," he said.

Neighbors said they saw some men in a white van take the scooter from in front of the house Wednesday morning. If you know anything, call Philadelphia Police.
