PHOENIX -

A line of American Airlines planes, sitting on the runway in Dallas. A computer outage of the airlines main reservations system led to hundreds of canceled flights and problems all over the country.

American flights at Sky Harbor were grounded all morning until 2 p.m. Tuesday. Five departing flights to Dallas and Chicago were canceled. Four incoming flights were also canceled.

Computers are now back up and running, but the problem caused delays all day long. Frustrated passengers, stuck in long lines.

"This is astounding what's happened here," said flier Bob Rudny. He demanded answers at American Airlines ticket counters.

"Our flight was canceled to Dallas-Fort Worth," said Margaret Palmer.

"I have no idea how we're going to get home," said Scott Muslin. "Once we got on the plane they said there's been some technical difficulties, we can't take off."

Scott Muslin and his two kids were stuck on the plane for two hours Tuesday morning. There was no air conditioning inside the plane, its engines turned off.

"My wife thought she was getting heat exhaustion. She's crying, both of them had their shirts off," said Muslin.

Passengers are shocked a computer outage could cause so much chaos.

"With all these people waiting for flights, there's only so many spaces, we're almost sure to be stuck here overnight," said Rudny.

"I understand that things happen you got to have a backup plan. Every business has a backup plan," said Muslin.

All flights up and running again. For those who were on canceled flights, they are being put on later flights. But some will have to stay here overnight.
