Slow down, Arizona: Over 80 people killed in work zone crashes

Updated:

When you're driving along the highway and there's roadwork up ahead, you're supposed to slow down.

Many drivers don't and they could be facing fines as well as putting those workers in danger.

Information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • Approximately 100 workers killed within work zones in the U.S. each year
  • Vast majority of victims (80 percent) are drivers/passengers
  • A work zone crash occurs every 14 minutes
  • Most common work zone crashes - rear end collisions

What drivers need to do:

  • Don't ignore the signs - slow down when approaching work zones
  • Pay attention and avoid distractions - hang up that cell phone
  • Don't tailgate - keep a safe distance behind the car in front of you
  • Watch for workers and flag crews - they have families to go home to
