Sandy Dog Nannies Take In Victims' Pets After Superstorm

Posted: Updated:

Just as victims of Superstorm Sandy were left without a place to live, their pets were left homeless as well.

But one woman in Vermont started a group that pairs animals with temporary owners, Fox's Molly Line reports.

Burlington is a long way from New York and the Jersey Shore, but when Joan Shannon read about the storm ravaged victims of Superstorm Sandy and their struggles to care for their pets, she knew she had to get involved.

"I thought that there was probably a need for temporary shelter for the dogs to help the pet owners, which is a little bit different than typical dog rescues. A typical dog rescue is all about helping the dogs," Shannon said.

Shannon founded Sandy Dog Nannies, an organization that fosters dogs.

And her efforts couldn't have come at a better time for Debbie Blair. Like so many, she lost almost everything in the storm.

"It is such a peace of mind, you know, that I have that I know my dog is safe and being well taken care of. And dogs pick up on all of our stress as well, so she was removed from all of the craziness that was going on in my house, and it was just a blessing."

Sandy Dog Nannies paired Debbie and her little cairn terrier, Jessie, with Kerry Madden in Manhattan.

A self-described dog lover, Kerry was initially hoping to find someone else to foster little Jessie when she decided to open her own home to the 11-year-old hound.

"I was guaranteeing them that this dog would be well taken care of, and I wanted them to take care of their needs," Madden said.

Each foster family is carefully vetted to make sure it will be a good fit for each other.

It will be months, and in some cases years, before these neighborhoods are rebuilt. But for Blair, knowing her little dog is safe and sound is one less thing she has to worry about.

It's people helping people – and man's best friend – at perhaps their greatest time of need, Line reported.
