The perfect price for prom dresses

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (myFOXDetroit.com) -

The line of teenage girls was so long, you would have thought they were waiting to meet Justin Timberlake.

JT wasn't in town, but that didn't disappoint the hundreds of high school ladies who showed up to the David Pressley School of Cosmetology in Royal Oak Sunday.

They were there for the FREE prom dresses.

Yes, free.

"Gown Town" is an annual event made possible by 98.7 AMP Radio, and dozens of generous donors.

"Prom dresses are like, $200-$300, and so we thought why not take those dresses that people just have lying in their closets, and if they're kind enough they can donate those," 98.7's Coop told Fox 2. "We collected them all through the entire month of March."

The gently-used dresses were then dry cleaned and put on display racks. More than 500 were made available this year, and young ladies from all over Metro Detroit showed up to take advantage.

It wasn't long before armfuls of dresses were being carried into the fitting room. Some arrived with a specific idea of what they wanted, while others came unsure of what they were looking for.

"I have no idea," said Taylor Stewart of Romeo. "I just want something short - or long...I don't know. The color? I don't know about the color, either."

Every year, the event helps hundreds of girls who may not have otherwise been able to afford a formal dress.

The radio station's goal was to treat everyone like a princess.

"They get to try it on, and if they don't like it, they take it back and go get another one, until they find the perfect prom dress that they want," Coop said.
