DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

It was a homecoming for Dr. Benjamin Carson, head of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Children's Center, as he spoke to an audience at Ben Carson High School for Science and Medicine in Detroit Friday.

Carson's book and movie, "Gifted Hands" about a poor, struggling little boy who goes on to become a brain surgeon has inspired millions. Part of his message on Friday was directed at young African Americans.

"Our young black males need to know that there are other options for them," he says. "So often they become victimized into thinking that they're not going to be able to become a CEO of a Fortune 500 company or nuclear physicist or something like that. And of course they can, but those examples are not played up."

Carson, who is retiring soon, also participated in a panel discussion lead by students.

It was nothing like his talk in February when he made national news with his view of gay marriage, which launched him into the world of politics.

"I am not particularly interested in politics in general, be it Michigan or anywhere else," he says. "But I am very interested in helping to open up a dialogue in our nation, helping people to be able to have open discussions about things -- not just call each other names -- but to sit down and discuss rationally why they believe what they believe. I believe if we do that, we can actually make progress in this country."

Welcome home, Dr. Carson.
