PHOENIX -

A 27-year-old man was killed after crashing an SUV into a tree near Northern and 35th Avenues.

Officers say a passerby saw the SUV crashed into a tree and called 911.

The 27-year-old driver was killed in the crash.

Investigators don't know why he collided with the tree, but say they don't believe he was impaired. They think he may have fallen asleep behind the wheel.

The intersection was closed for about an hour while officers investigated.
