Talker: Hoarding, binge eating listed as new mental disorders

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Mentally ill or just human? When the calendar turns from May 21 to May 22, millions of Americans will instantly have new mental disorders.

The American Psychiatric Association will release a new book called "DSM-5" the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders." The manual is so influential among doctors; it's considered the bible of mental disorders.

The new fifth edition creates a whole new batch of things people do that will now be considered official mental disorders. Some that critics say some are not disorders, but just part of being human.

For example, "hoarding" is now its own official disorder.

Think about how many people could be diagnosed with the newly declared "Binge Eating Disorder." If you're known to eat too much deep-dish, you could be one. It pertains to anyone who eats to excess twelve times in a three month period. That's about once a week.

"Internet Disorder" is not yet an official disorder, but the manual lists it as an issue that needs further study. The thinking is that people who spend a lot of their time online may be addicted.

Perhaps the most controversial new disorder is bereavement, a sadness that comes when someone dies. Critics say such grief is a normal reaction to death, not a type of depression.

Among the concerns are that many people will be put on medications as a "quick fix" that they don't really need. One statistic says that 10% of U.S. adults are said to be on antidepressants right now.
