PHOENIX (AP) - Operators of the Phoenix Zoo have learned the sex of an Andean bear cub whose gender was a mystery for the last three months as zookeepers left the mother bear alone to bond with her baby.
The zoo says the cub born on Jan. 3 is a boy.
The cub hasn't yet been named.
Zookeepers left the mother bear named Rio and her cub alone as Rio became protective and didn't come out of the area where they lived.
The cub's sex was discovered last week as Rio went to another part of the area where the bears were living.
This gave zookeepers a chance to give the cub a quick once-over.
Rio had given birth to three cubs in the past, but those cubs died within about a week.
