UCLA Water Polo Player Accused Of Raping Student

Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11/ CNS) A UCLA freshman water polo player was arrested on suspicion of raping a female acquaintance who also attends UCLA in a campus residence hall, UCLA police announced today.

Hakop Jack Kaplanyan, 18, of Glendale, was arrested Tuesday, the same day the female student filed a report with campus police, police said.

An attorney representing Kaplanyan told ABC7 his client and the woman had been dating and engaged in consensual sex.

Kaplanyan was booked early Wednesday and has been released on bail.

Kaplanyan was suspended from the university, subject to an appeal, campus officials said.

Kaplanyan is due at the Airport Courthouse on April 25 at 8:30 a.m.

Kaplanyan was redshirted during the 2012 season. He is listed as 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 205 pounds.

Kaplanyan was among 324 UCLA athletes named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for the fall quarter, which requires at least a 3.0 grade point average and passing at least 12 units.

Kaplanyan is a graduate of Hoover High School in Glendale. His 593 goals are the second most in California by a boys' high school water polo player.

An NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired. The police department asked its Twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others decided to not "play nice, " sharing beating photos and more.
