The Talker: California bans use of mobile GPS apps while driving

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Most of us would probably agree that texting while driving is dangerous and should be illegal, but what about holding your phone to look at a map?

Some of us have a GPS mounted on our dashboards; others just have a phone with a map app and we keep it in the cup holder or on the passenger seat.

That was the case with a man in California who was driving along. He had his phone already set to his GPS and he picked it up to look at the map. Then, he got pulled over by the police and was handed a ticket for violating California's distracted driving law.

The law says: "...a person shall not drive a motor vehicle while using a wireless telephone unless that telephone is specifically designed and configured to allow hands-free listening and talking, and is used in that manner while driving."

The man fought the ticket, saying the law does not apply to looking at maps. But a judge said holding a phone to look at a map is distracted driving -- the same as sending a text message -- and the law applies.
