RIVERSIDE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A west suburban woman was charged with theft Friday for allegedly stealing packages from people's front porches, police said.

Karen Stryjewski, 57, of Berwyn, was arrested Friday after Riverside police received a call at 7:22 p.m. about a theft in progress in the 3700 block of Haas Avenue.

When officers arrived, two witnesses identified Stryjewski as the woman who took the package from a front porch and hid it nearby, police said. She also confessed to the theft, according to statement from police.

Officers found the package hidden under a tarp in a driveway a short distance away.

"The theft of packages off of porches is not uncommon," Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said in the statement. "Thieves will follow delivery trucks around especially during the holiday season.

"They look to see where a package is delivered and then come back a short time later to steal it. In this case, Ms. Stryjewski was working on her own and there was no indication that she was part of a crew working the area".
