Leaders Reflect On Passing Of 'The Iron Lady'

Posted: Updated:

Flags on Downing Street in London are flying at half-staff in honor of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Thatcher passed away Monday morning following a stroke. She was 87-years-old.

The Iron Lady's passing has left many world leaders remarking on the legacy she leaves behind.

In a statement released Monday, President Obama called Thatcher an "example to women everywhere" and said that she "showed our daughters that there is no glass ceiling that can't be shattered."

Current British Prime Minister, David Cameron said, "We've lost a great prime minister, a great leader, a great Briton. As our first woman prime minister, Margaret Thatcher succeeded against all the odds. And the real thing about Margaret Thatcher is that she didn't just lead our country, she saved our country. I believe she'll go down as the greatest British peacetime prime minister."

Queen Elizabeth also expressed sadness over Lady Thatcher's death, and said she would be sending a private message of sympathy to the family.

Thatcher's personal and political resilience earned her the nickname of "The Iron Lady" and the title of the first woman prime minister of Britain. She once said she would like her epitaph to read that she restored Britain.
