IRS to collect personal info from Facebook, Twitter

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

You have just about a week left to file your taxes -- the deadline is next Monday, April 15. But this year, the IRS will be collecting more than just your money.

According to several reports, the agency will also be collecting personal information from sites like Facebook and Twitter. Some tax payers not happy about a new push from the Internal Revenue service to monitor social media and digital transactions for tax cheats.

"Be careful with what you say on social media platforms -- postings are being made for all kinds of purposes," said attorney Kristen Mathews.

Speaking via Skype, Mathews has concerns the government is pushing the limits of what has historically been considered private.

"There are laws that regulate the government's ability to get a hold of things like credit card transaction history. But those laws have become more permissive in the last several years, particularly after 9-11, and so some might say those laws are no longer in line with the average expectation of privacy," Mathews said.

For its part, the government has said it would only check a Facebook page or Twitter account if there is already red flag in a tax form.

"If you haven't taken the measures to make your Facebook and Twitter private the way I have, the way most people have, then you're sort of asking for it because that's stuff is public information,' said a concerned citizen.
